Tim Schafer, general gaming monolith responsible for games like Grim Fandango (want an HD version!) and Day of the Tentacle (also want an HD version!) woke up yesterday to find an unusual offer on the table. Someone had openly offered to fund the development of a sequel to Psychonauts, another much-loved cult classic.
Who? Why, Markus “Notch” Persson, that’s who! He who madeth Minecraft also added later when people picked up on it, “I’m serious.” Clearly the man has enough cash in the bank that he’s mysteriously championing the development of a sequel to a game that didn’t do that well commercially the first time around. Good on him too, I must say. If I had that many millions in the bank, I’d also think about championing the return of some games.
For me, I’d go back to the 16 bit era. Zombies Ate My Neighbours! is one I’d immediately want to see return, although the chances of that happening on its own now are very high – what with the Hollywood big-budget film version of it happening. I’d also love to see Evo: Search for Eden back, or rather, redeveloped. I always loved it – but still think it was rather short. There’s so much that could be done with it too!
But that’s just me. Spokespeople for Double Fine have said that “Tim and Markus are talking. Who knows what might happen?”
Well, chalk one person up to buying a sequel… to quote Futurama…
“Shut up and take my money!”
